RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

From 1999 the Civic Museum with the Archaeological Superintendency for Meridian Etruria and the Archaeological group of the Cerite Territory is designing an archaeological map of the seabed of Pyrgi.

This is part of the "Submerged Pyrgi Project" which is collecting information on the history of the part of the Pyrgi and Cerite coast, concentrating on the ancient port of Pyrgi-Santa Severa which is now found under the sea.

It is now possible to make a first attempt to reconstruct the landscape along the coast and have an idea of how the port was in the Etruscan, Roman and Medieval Era ( F. Enei, Pyrgi Sommersa, Ricognizioni Archaeologiche Subacquaee nel porto dell'Antica Caere, S. Marinella 2004 ).

In the museum there is an archaeological lab. that studies and reconstructs parts of antique ships and instruments used for navigating. The lab. has recently reconstructed on a real life scale a water bindola pump invented in the Roman era. The copy was made using the same materials and techniques and shows exactly how it worked on the ships.

The museum and the Cerite Archaeological Group are studying records looking for documents about the medieval and modern history of the Santa Severa Castle and its estate. The documents that have been found up to now maybe consulted in the museum's files.
